Imagine the number of trees that are cut down every year in order to satisfy our endless demand for paper. What if it was possible to make paper without harming any trees? The magic of stone paper lies in this. It’s time for a new story. In an age when the planet is crying out for sustainable solutions, it’s important to embrace a revolutionary, eco-friendly alternative.
What exactly is stone paper?
Stone-made paper means that more trees are planted, less water is wasted, and no chemicals or bleaches enter the environment. The paper is made in a factory powered by solar energy, which further reduces its carbon footprint. It is waterproof and tear-resistant. The plastic is not 100% virgin, but it’s made from recycled plastic bottles and plant waste.
What exactly is paper? Here’s a more detailed explanation.
Stone paper is made of calcium carbonate, which comes from the waste from marble or limestone mining. The plastic used for the stone paper is high-density Polyethylene (HDPE). Calcium carbonate is finely ground and then mixed with HDPE to form an 80/20 mixture. The HDPE used by a good company is recycled, not virgin.
Is stone paper really eco-friendly?
No product is perfect. The stone paper we sell is more environmentally friendly, even though it’s partly made of plastic.
A stone paper notebook, for example, is far superior in terms of environmental impact when you consider that no water, acid, bleach, or optical brighteners were used during production. The water is not contaminated, and the environment is not poisoned. Solar energy is used to run the process.
All raw materials are recycled waste. There is no deforestation, which means that forests and woodlands, as well as biodiversity, are protected.
We’ve covered the energy needed to transport our stone papers. Climate compensating for emissions during shipping and transport is how we take responsibility. We actively plant trees to offset our carbon footprint rather than contributing to deforestation.
While stone paper has its own set of drawbacks, the eco-friendly option it provides is a great way to conserve natural resources while reducing environmental damage.
Can stone paper be biodegradable?
Stone paper is not biodegradable. After a year or a year-and-a-half of exposure to sunlight, the stone paper will dissolve into dust. If there is no sunlight, then there will be no degradation. So, if the paper is in a landfill, it will remain there. The same is true of paper made from trees.
Stone paper, on the other hand, is recyclable. Stone paper materials can be reprocessed and made into new stone papers or recycled with HDPE plastics for different purposes. While a large amount of paper made from trees is recycled, the fibres of traditional paper can only be recycled so many times. Paper fibres get shorter each time they are recycled. Therefore, paper can only be recycled four to six times.
Does stone paper burn?
It’s true, but unlike paper pulp, it does not smoulder. The marks left by errant sparks are not likely to spread. If you wash the pages with soapy water, any notes will be fine. Just make sure that they were written in pencil or ballpoint. The stone paper is water-resistant and won’t be damaged by liquids. This makes it an ideal choice for outdoor activities and environments where moisture is a concern.
What is recycled stone?
Stone paper is made from “waste bits”, or cast-offs, from marble quarries. These are finely ground and then pulverized. It’s a pretty harmless substance. It’s probably already in your home as a marble board for cutting or as baking soda.
Who invented stone paper?
In the late 1990s, Taiwan produced its first stone paper. It has evolved and is now used in various ways. This BBC video shows how a Taiwanese firm makes paper out of stone.
